Characteristics of Kundalini-Related Experiences During Tantric Yoga Meditation
This 2022 exploratory study by Richard W. Maxwell and Sucharit Katyal investigates the incidence and phenomenology of kundalini-related experiences in a sample of 80 adept meditators from the Ananda Marga Tantric Yoga tradition.
Study Focus
Unlike previous studies that relied on eclectic or clinically distressed samples, this study focused on healthy, systematically trained practitioners to observe “balanced” kundalini arousal. The researchers used a semi-structured questionnaire to assess experiences across six modalities: Somatosensory, Motor, Temperature, Light, Sound, and Mood.
Key Findings
- Prevalence: A vast majority of participants reported spontaneous meditation-induced experiences. The most common were positive mood shifts (73%), followed by spontaneous motor activity (61%), visual light phenomena (56%), somatosensory sensations (53%), and inner sounds (46%).
- Kundalini Phenomena: Many participants reported distinct “rising sensations” along the spine (often explicitly identifying it as Kundalini), accompanied by involuntary movements (kriyas), vocalizations, and changes in breathing.
- Dose-Response: Interestingly, the frequency of these spontaneous experiences was not strictly correlated with the total hours of meditation practice. However, a greater amount of lifetime practice was associated with increased trait mindfulness, greater positive affect, and decreased negative affect.
The study provides empirical validation that kundalini-like phenomena are common, complex, and generally associated with positive psychological outcomes when occurring within a supportive, structured contemplative framework — in contrast to the spiritual emergencies documented in unsupervised contexts (see Awakening_of_Kundalini_Chakras_Presenting_as_Psychosis, Reflections_of_Shaktipat_Psychosis_or_the_Rise_of_Kundalini).
