Reflections of Shaktipat: Psychosis or the Rise of Kundalini?

This 1993 case study by clinical psychologist Jon Ossoff documents the hospitalization of “Rosita,” a young Mexican woman who presented at a psychiatric center with bizarre, hyperactive behavior and mutism, initially diagnosed as an acute psychotic episode.

The Presentation

Rosita was observed engaging in spontaneous, repetitive, machine-gun-like breathing (pranayama), bounding into walls, arching her back violently, and making specific finger gestures (mudras) with her eyes rolled back. She appeared disconnected from reality and was entirely non-verbal, leading the psychiatric staff to believe she was having a psychotic break, possibly drug-induced. She was eventually subdued with physical and chemical restraints.

The Diagnosis: Premature Kundalini Awakening

Days later, upon regaining lucidity, Rosita revealed she had recently attended a meditation retreat where she received Shaktipat (the transmission of spiritual energy from a guru intended to awaken Kundalini). Ossoff realized that Rosita was not psychotic but was undergoing a classic “Premature Kundalini Awakening” (PKA) or Spiritual_Emergency. Her spontaneous movements were kriyas — involuntary physical purifications triggered by Kundalini energy attempting to clear blockages in the nervous system.

Treatment and Implications

Instead of treating her with long-term antipsychotic medication, Ossoff advised her to cease meditation temporarily and prescribed an Ayurvedic grounding regimen (heavy foods, oil massages, moderate exercise) to pacify her overstimulated nervous system. Rosita recovered completely without further psychiatric intervention.

The case strongly supports the transpersonal psychological model (echoing researchers like Lee Sannella and Stanislav Grof) that certain acute psychiatric crises are in fact misunderstood spiritual/evolutionary processes. It highlights the danger of the mainstream medical establishment misdiagnosing and medicating individuals undergoing intense psycho-spiritual transformations.
